The Executive Committee (EC) of the Sigma Chi International Fraternity has voted to immediately suspend the organization’s Rutgers University chapter indefinitely. The General Fraternity made the decision due to continued risk management and other accountability issues with the chapter. The actions were inconsistent with the Fraternity’s values, and the EC was left with no other option than to suspend the chapter’s charter.

Undergraduate members of the chapter have been moved to suspended active status and will be unable to participate in anything that could be conceived of as a Sigma Chi activity until 2023.

The Fraternity’s goal is to eventually return the chapter to campus; however, there is no timetable for doing so, and the organization would partner with the university to ensure that future members of the chapter would have a positive environment where they could be successful in their endeavors.

“I am saddened any time we must close a chapter, however, we took this action to suspend the Rutgers chapter for the good of the organization and all of our members,” says 70th Grand Consul (international president) Tommy Geddings, SOUTH CAROLINA 1985. “Only by holding ourselves and our chapters accountable when they are not upholding our values can we truly show the values we espouse.”
