Indiana State Chapter Closed After Failing to Follow International Fraternity Policies
The International Fraternity’s Executive Committee (EC) has voted to close its undergraduate chapter at Indiana State University due to accountability issues among its leadership and failure to comply with the Preparation for Brotherhood pledge program.
The initiated chapter members will now be on suspended active status, meaning they will be recognized as initiates, but they are prohibited from engaging in anything that could be conceived as a Sigma Chi activity until 2026. Pledges are without commitment to Sigma Chi and are free to affiliate with other campus fraternities.
The International Fraternity hopes to one day return to campus, with the support of Indiana State University administrators. Sigma Chi will partner with Indiana State to ensure that the timing is right for a return and that the environment would be a positive one in which to build a chapter of future leaders.
Seventieth Grand Consul (international president) Tommy Geddings, SOUTH CAROLINA 1985, said making the decision to close a chapter is always difficult, but that Fraternity leaders did so to protect the integrity of the organization.
“The Preparation for Brotherhood (P4B) pledge program was enforced in our chapters in fall 2016 to prepare young men to experience our Ritual and to safeguard pledges from hazing,” said Geddings. “Unfortunately, our Indiana State chapter did not comply with P4B. Without compliance, the chapter showed that it is more focused on its own interests than on ensuring new members have a meaningful pledgeship where they develop brotherhood and experience the Fraternity’s ideals.”
